Ecuador is a small country (256,370sq. km) about the size of Colorado or Italy. But what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in geographic variety. In a recent study of  Conservation International, Ecuador is among the 17 "megadiverse" countries. With its relatively small territory Ecuador has the biggest biodiversity per area in the world with 9.2 species per square km, it occupies the first place in the world with regards to species (46) per area.
In fact the 17% of the country`s territory has been declared National Protected Areas, Ecuador corresponds 0.17% of the planet`s surface holding the biggest BIODIVERSITY  of LAND VERTEBRATES per area (mammals, birds; of the 32 Bird World Life Zones, 26 are found in Ecuador, amphibians and reptiles). 16,087 vascular plant species, 4,250 species of orchids (of each 10 plants, 4 are orchids).
All of these are possible thanks to 3 factors: The Andes, Equatorial zone, Humboldt and El Niño Current.
